Housed at the UGR’s Mind, Brain and Behaviour Research Centre (CIMCYC in Spanish), the lab includes four fully equipped rooms for sleep behaviour research. Over €150,000 has been invested in the lab, which will provide key infrastructure for research conducted by the UGR’s new Sleep Research Department, launched on the 27th April 2016.

The University of Granada and Lo Monaco Group, a local company specializing in sleeping equipment, will jointly conduct research into the study, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of different areas with the field of sleep science. It is now the largest centre of its kind in Europe.

According to the agreement, the Lo Monaco Group will provide financial backing and professional expertise to perform the research included in the programme, as well as equipment to be used at the Sleep Laboratory.

The Laboratory will focus on developing joint research projects; financing contracts; providing grants and financial support to researchers and interns; funding research studies, doctoral theses and other publications; transferring research findings to Lo Monaco Group and the private sector; supporting patent development; and organizing courses, seminars, conferences, as well as other educational and promotional activities.

Research will be conducted in the areas of insomnia, fibromyalgia, sleep deprivation, sleeping patterns in hyperactive children, sleep deprivation, sleeping disorders in children; sleep and music (music a sleep therapy), sleep apnoea, nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking, and how aspects such as altitude affect sleep.
