Sahrawi Week at the UGR

The Sahrawi People: The 40 year struggle for freedom

2016 marks the 40 year commemoration since the creation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic’s constitution. Following the withdrawal of the Spanish colonial powers from the region in 1975, the territory subsequently became a Moroccan colony, giving rise to a conflict between the Moroccan army and the Polisario Front.

Since the 1990s, and following a peace process, the situation is described in the refugee camps as one of “neither peace nor war”, as Morocco continually fails to organize a long-awaited referendum. During this time, strong support for the Sahrawi’s self-determination and self-government has been demonstrated by diverse groups and organizations throughout the world and especially in Andalusia. The University of Granada will also demonstrate its support for the movement with ‘Sahrawi Week’, which will take place from the 22-26 of February 2016 and will encompass a broad range of activities – documentaries, forums, conferences, workshops and exhibitions. The 27th of February, Sahrawi National Unity Day, will round up a week full of fascinating events.

The activities are open to everyone (including the general public) and are free of charge. However, if you are a UGR student you can obtain ECTS credits and a certificate of attendance for your participation in the events.
