Eco-Campus activities and events: 4-15 May 2015

Ecocampus excursion 1

The 2015 edition of the Eco-Campus initiative, a pioneering educational and environmental programme which takes place throughout Andalusian universities every year, kicks off on the 4th May at the UGR. The programme promises an extensive and exciting range of activities, which encompass 4 strategic areas: flora, fauna, geology, and water. In total, two full days of activities and events, including guided tours, conferences, debates, outdoor workshops, and film screenings, will be devoted to each one of these four knowledge areas. Additionally, on the 15th May, diverse stakeholders, organisations and individuals, will come together to take part in the ‘Environmental Volunteering Conference’ (Encuentro de Voluntariado Ambiental) to debate the University of Granada’s approach to promoting student participation in environmental and green issues.

Promoting environmental awareness

The UGR, as a public higher education institution, has long been aware of the fundamental importance of playing a key role in protecting natural resources and promoting environmental sustainability in Andalusia (as well as further afield). Over the last number of years the University has endeavored to promote environmental awareness, while at the same time taking into account its own socio-environmental impact. This is reflected both in its environmental policies, its commitment to cutting-edge research in environmental studies, and its engagement in initiatives such as Eco-Campus, which enable it to have a considerable and positive impact on society, both locally and regionally.

A key aim of the programme is to increase and improve student participation in green issues and inspire them to forge long-term connections with the emerging and increasingly important eco-entrepreneurship sector.

The Eco-Campus programme is fully endorsed and supported by the Regional Ministry for the Environment and Territorial Planning (La Consejería de Medio Ambiente y Ordenación del Territorio de la Junta de Andalucía y la Universidad de Granada), as part of a move to raise awareness about pivotal environmental issues in Andalusia. 80% of the Programme is financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

*Unless otherwise stated, all events held during the programme are free of charge. However, for some of the activities you may need to sign up in advance, given the limited number of available places.
