The University of Granada will host a range of events and activities in the lead-up to Africa Day, celebrated on 25 May every year. Conferences, seminars and workshops will encompass areas such as migration, feminism, economics, ethnocentrism, land and territorial rights, as well as dance, music, and art.
On Thursday 21 May, the celebrations will kick-off with conferences on Senegal, spanning from the colonial period to the present, and analyzing the role played by feminist social movements in shaping the country's sociopolitical sphere. Fatou Sarr (Director of the Gender and Scientific Research Laboratory at Dakar’s Cheikh Anta Diop University) will take part in the conference. Fatou Sarr's conference also forms part of the CICODE's 3-part conference series on the topics of gender and development Feminist Voices from the South (“Voces Feministas desde el Sur”) .
Afterwards, Jordi Tomas will then discuss the conflicts which have been taking place over the last 30 years in the Casamance region of Senegal. While sociopolitical movements which seek to bring peace to the region have gathered significant strength, the conflict continues to persist. The conference will be brought to a close with the screening of the documentary Kásuumaay, researched and shot over the course of years with a view to shedding light on the complex causes underlying the violence as well as on the fundamental importance of tradition in African societies.
On Friday morning students and participants will have the opportunity to become acquainted with African movements which have emerged here in Granada. They will also become familiar with some of the main non-profit organisations and associations in the city, the areas that these NGOs work in, how they engage with society and how, as active citizens, they can get involved with these organisations.
