The Charles I Institute of Theoretical and Computational Physics (El Instituto Carlos I de Física Teórica y Computacional or iC1)

The Carlos I Institute of Theoretical and Computational Physics was founded in 1991 in order to conduct specialised research in fundamental, applied and interdisciplinary areas within the field of Theoretical and Computational Physics.

At the Institute, our mission is to:

  1. Stimulate scientific merit, collaboration, and coordination among our members and researchers.
  2. Improve research facilities, by optimising the effective use of the facilities and equipment already available to us at the centre, and by obtaining new funding sources for acquiring new equipment.
  3. Promote the Institute internationally, by highlighting key research findings in academic journals.

Our involvement in teaching is also noteworthy. We offer diverse postgraduate qualifications, for instance the ACTO Programme - Applied Cientific Computational Techniques (or Aplicaciones Científico Técnicas del Ordenador in Spanish) and the course entitled Computer Applications for Secondary School Classrooms.

We are also actively involved in the masters and doctoral programme entitled FISYMAT (Física y Matemáticas), as well as the METAF programme - Methods and Scientific Techniques in Physics (or Métodos y Técnicas Avanzadas en Física in Spanish).

Additionally, we have contributed substantially to the creation of a Spanish node of the Centre européen de calcul atomique et moléculaire, and have designed and launched PROTEUS, an important local computational tool.

We work continuously to promote the work of our researchers, by actively supporting the STAPHYS and FISES initiatives, participating in academic societies such as EPS and IUPAP, periodically organising the Granada Seminars, and by publishing the Granada Lectures, among other publications. These initiatives have been very successful, allowing our research Institute to gain international recognition as a leading Institute at the forefront of innovation and knowledge transfer in the field of Theoretical and Computational Physics.
