Undergraduate Degree in Sociology

Undergraduate Degree in Sociology

Programme Sociology
Description Sociology is the science that studies societies, how these societies have come to be, and how to bring about positive changes in diverse communities. One of the objectives of sociologists is to apply key research developments to social policy, thereby making a positive impact in their society by means of the practical application of their theories and research.

Our Degree in Sociology provides students with all the necessary theoretical concepts to become excellent sociologists. It also equips them with all the tools and skills, mathematical and otherwise, needed to critically analyse societies and the behaviour of the people that live in them.

The discipline of sociology was first introduced in the University of Granada in 1988, making the UGR the first University in Andalusia to offer studies in the field. Since then, our Faculty has established pioneering research groups, brought together experienced and motivated teaching staff, and collected an expansive range of library resources.

This four-year degree is comprised of four learning stages: basic subjects, core subjects, a compulsory 6-credit internship programme and elective subjects. Subjects on this Degree include contents in areas of knowledge such as sociology, economics, anthropology, political science, psychology, administration science, social structures, history, migration, data analysis, the Spanish political system, and demographics.

Sociologists are in high demand in many sectors of our society. Their extensive knowledge of many of the inner workings of society make them competent professionals in many areas, especially those related to analysis, administration and social intervention. They develop a skill-set which is well-suited to working in NGOs and public administration, coordinating different projects and programmes (such as gender inequality prevention, identifying and managing funding sources for projects in developing countries). Many of our graduates also go on to pursue a career in teaching or research. Policy makers also seek sociologists in order to fill consultancy related positions.

Sociology is a fascinating science, and is now more important than it ever has been. Every institution, every sector of society looks for professional sociologists who can assess the issues relevant to their sector, and propose solutions to complex problems. As such, sociology is one of the key sciences that will allow us to assess the effectiveness of social policies in the future, and foresee whether they will positive or negative.
