Every month, the UGR Publishing House selects a “book of the month” with a view to bringing authors and their works closer to society. The Publishing House have chosen Miguel Ángel González’s musical analysis text “Manual de los cantes de Granada” as the book of the month for September 2016.
The book provides an extensive study of the Alpujarra region, found on the southern slopes of Granada’s Sierra Nevada mountain range. It is without a doubt the most ambitious work of its kind, employing a multidisciplinary approach and enabling the reader to thoroughly broaden their knowledge of the region. The book delves deeply into diverse topics such as the works of historically significant writers on the region, its harsh geography and chequered history, spanning from judicial and administrative reforms to the Moorish rebellion and subsequent Castillian resettlement during the Reconquista.
Manuel Titos Martínez’s book entitled Sierra Nevada: una gran historia has been chosen as the UGR book of the month for June 2016. The Sierra Nevada mountain range has been explored from the perspective of diverse branches within the natural sciences over the last number of decades (botany, geology, zoology, geography etc.). Martínez’s new study, however, delves deep into a less-explored area – the Sierra Nevada’s rich and fascinating history. The book encompasses everything from a history of the first inhabitants to settle in the Sierra, to economic, religious, environmental and war-related issues.
The University of Granada Press has chosen Falsarios de Novela, by Professor Manuel Barrios Aguilera, as the book of the month for March 2016. The work scrutinizes the relationship between history and the historical novel, placing particular emphasis on the pivotal social responsibilities of historians and providing a historical-literary analysis of 9 novels which, published over the last two decades, examine falsifications of Granada’s history.
Miguel Garrido Atienza’s “Las Fiestas de la Toma”, has been chosen by the UGR’s Publishing House as the book of the month for January 2016. The work provides anthropological insights into a key moment in history - the last stand and fall of Granada in 1492, and raises questions about the appropriateness of its subsequent commemoration in the political sphere.
The UGR Publishing House has selected the Memorias del Conde de Benalúa, written by the Duke of San Pedro de Galatino from Granada, as the book of the month for October 2015.
