Genetic, Nutritional and Environmental Factors in Growth and Development

Genetic, Nutritional and Environmental Factors in Growth and Development

Masters Programme Genetic, Nutritional and Environmental Factors in Growth and Development
The UGR’s Masters in Genetic, Nutritional, and Environmental Factors in Growth and Development (NUTRENVIGEN-G+D) is a pioneering programme jointly taught by five universities and coordinated by the UGR. Multidisciplinary in nature, the course is aimed at graduates from the health sciences and healthcare professionals working with children and adolescents who wish to update their knowledge and skills. As such, the programme offers students the opportunity to broaden and improve their research skills while focusing on their professional development at the same time.

The overarching objective of the programme is to enable students to become highly competent, multidisciplinary researchers who fully understand growth and development and who acquire the ability to lead projects and work effectively in teams, in constantly changing environments. As a student on our course you will learn to develop strategies designed to improve children’s health, thereby ensuring their future health in adulthood. You will also learn how to prevent illnesses, implement dietary recommendations, encourage target groups to pursue healthy dietary habits (pregnant women, children and adolescents), and improve environmental factors so as to prevent, recognize, and treat the harmful effects of environmental contamination on children.

The NUTREVIGEN-G+D Masters provides students with comprehensive and cutting-edge paediatric training in five key areas – physiology and pathology; genetics; metabolism; nutrition and environment; and paediatric age groups. It also provides you with the opportunity to explore the most advanced and up to date treatments (functional nutrition therapy) in the field.

Moreover, the Masters gives you the chance to acquire hands-on experience in the sector by completing an internship at one of the programme’s 25 partner centres and hospitals.

Our programme has gained considerable international prestige, leading to the creation of the Early Nutrition Academy, by means of which our students can take part in postgraduate courses offered by our partner universities in the international consortium.

The programme consists of 5 main modules:

1. Nutrition and Genetics in Paediatrics: Nutrigenomics

2. Growth and Development

3. Nutrition and Metabolism in Paediatrics

4. Environmental Factors, Physical Activity, Growth, and Development (Part I)

5. Environmental Factors, Physical Activity, Growth, and Development (Part II)

As the programme combines scientific rigour, pioneering research, and professional development, graduates are versatile and are thus highly sought-after in current labour markets. Upon successful completion of the programme, many choose to pursue careers in companies operating in the fields of infant nutrition and child feeding; and private and public bodies with departments in the areas of paediatrics; nutrition and food science; dietetics; biochemistry; immunology; pharmacology; genetics; medical education; neurological development; psychological treatments; developmental psychology; experimental psychology; behavioural physiology, or in science teaching and social anthropology teaching. Others choose to continue further postgraduate studies in the field, in order to embark on a full-time research or third-level teaching career in the field.
