Architectural Refurbishment

Architectural Refurbishment

Masters Programme Architectural Refurbishment
Urban development and growth gave rise to much of the economic growth during the years leading up to the current financial recession. The bursting of the speculative bubble, and in particular the real estate bubble, has left us with a surplus of underused property. Moreover, the quality of a considerable amount of this property is poor.

Securing investment in refurbishing and renovation projects in existing buildings and spaces, as opposed to investing in the construction of new (and often unneeded) ones, is a fundamental challenge in contemporary society. Stimulating economic growth, while at the same time taking into account the sustainability of urban development projects, encompasses a diverse factors such as environmental issues, quality of life, energy efficiency, services, accessibility, and social cohesion. Within the construction sector, refurbishment is a key means by which we can guarantee sustainability. The majority of current buildings are now old, obsolete, and present serious defects and shortcomings, stemming from previous periods of construction which are not up to contemporary construction standards and regulations. It is also important to remember that architectural refurbishment includes historical buildings.

Our Masters in Architectural Refurbishment is a highly innovative programme providing students with a solid grounding in research, academic, and professional areas related to architectural refurbishment, addressing one of the most pressing societal needs of our times. As a student on our course, you will acquire the knowledge and most up to date methodology and techniques in the discipline. You will also learn how to apply innovative technology to structural analyses, solving issues related to health standards, insulation, and energy efficiency.

The programme is divided into 8 main modules:
