The course Rethinking Africa: Global Rights and Southern Epistemologies will be held during the months of October and November 2016 at the UGR.

Many of us are unfamiliar with the Black Africa, mainly because the information we are exposed to is scarce or focuses mainly on issues such as poverty or development aid. Consequently, most of us are unacquainted with other aspects such as; societal models, social movements, welfare distribution, culture and the arts, alternative economic models, and the role of universities in society. A lack of adequate information on these topics has contributed to the creation of a distorted picture that conceals the true wealth of knowledge and activities generated by over 900 million people.

Rethinking Africa means looking at it, (re)discovering it, and learning about it from perspectives that shed light on the realities, debates, and alternatives currently emerging from the continent. At the same time, rethinking Africa entails reexamining the concept that we have of ourselves and the societies we live in. Moreover, it means exploring the social problems that we have in common and pooling solutions to these problems, taking into account both local and global issues, with a view to paving the way for a fairer world.

Renowned experts from diverse universities, research institutes, and associations will explore an extensive range of topics, such as southern epistemologies, social participation, ethnocentrism, social movements, economics, the right to migrate, and food security, to mention just a few areas.
