The Federico Olóriz Neuroscience Institute, founded in 1955, is the second oldest institute of its kind in Spain. With the retirement of its founding director in 1990, the institute, which had previously focused its efforts on exploring the disciplines of anatomy and anthropology, shifted its focus to the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary study of the brain, its functions, and its pathologies. Since then, the Institute has earned its place as one of the leading neuroscience research centres in Europe.

We conduct pioneering research in a number of key areas, including these broad fields:

• Neurodegenerative diseases: evolution and prevention
• Neurobiology of emotional and behavioural disorders
• Memory, learning, and neuroplasticity
• Neuroendocrinology and metabolism
• Pain neurobiology and effective treatments
• Cell death (apoptosis and necrosis)
• Brain function, cognitive development, and ageing

We are also involved in running doctoral programmes at the UGR, and provide postgraduate scholars with world-class academic support. Additionally, we are fully committed to ensuring that key research developments made at our institute are published in leading academic journals and textbooks, thereby ensuring that our work is disseminated effectively and can be put to practical use, with a view to improving society’s wellbeing.
